Drawing Up the Clinical Oncology Research Conflict of Interest Policy (ver.1)
As written in the Foreword of Clinical Oncology Research Conflict of Interest Policy (ver.1) by the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology (JSCO) and the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO), conflict of interest (COI) in an individual researcher is inevitable in conducting clinical oncology research. Essential in the COI policy is management of COI by clearly stated rules and to never regulate industry-academic collaborative research. A number of Japanese universities, colleges and research institutes have established their own COI policies for clinical oncology research in recent years, however, no Japanese scientific societies had adopted them. In June 2006, the JSCO and JSMO came to an agreement to draw up a common COI policy. After considerable discussions over several meetings by the members of the Joint Formulation Committee (JSCO/JSMO) and reviews by ethical committees of the JSCO and JSMO, the COI policy was completed in July 2007.Each society also made its own bylaws for making adjustments to the policies of the individual societies. The board of directors, councils, and the general committees of the societies adopted COI policy and the bylaws in October 2007 at the JSCO annual meeting and in March 2008 at the JSMO annual meeting. The policy was implemented from April 2008 by the both societies.
